Meghalaya Lifestyle

Flamboyant traditional sports are deep rooted in many age old cultural practices over the globe and observed with all the traditional fervour. These events provide a treat for photographer’s eye and lens. The Jallikattu (bull- taming sport) tradition in Tamilnadu province of South India dates back to 400-100 B.C. and is considered a symbol of inherited cultural fad and traditional chauvinism, kept alive through generations. The risky sport is about human-animal relation featured by conflict, taming and domesticating. My fascination for rural lifestyles and cultural congregations drove me to Madurai town in Tamilnadu for many years to capture the unfolding details of the event to the best of my ability. The hanging panel depicts the ferocity and velocity of the sporting act, mood of frivolous earnestness among the human challengers, anxiety of the spectators and the dusty festive atmosphere in the arena. The panel reflects my passion and a passionate tradition.
